Have you tried the version 12.62 driver at https://epson.com/Support/Printers/Single-Function-Inkjet-Printers/Epson-Stylus-Series/Epson-Stylus-C88/s/SPT_C11C617001?review-filter=macOS+12.x ?
Resetting the printing system may help in some cases.

Reinstalling original software (for example, from a CD once supplied with the printer) is usually not a good idea.
Try uninstalling and reinstalling the printer driver.
Hi,
In order to check whether the printer as such works, you may want to try printing a test page:
https://files.support.epson.com/htmldocs/sc88__/sc88__ug/probsol2.htm#wp1007127
If the test page is OK, but you cannot print from the Macs, it could be a USB cable/connection problem. If so, try another USB cable to begin with.
If the printer's (internal) USB connection for some reason is faulty, and since this printer model has a parallel port as well, it may even be possible to connect a USB-to-parallel adapter from a Mac to the C88. Alternatively, an Ethernet-to-parallel print server, allowing the printer to be networked.
Hello Sandra,
Thank you for the information.
Yes, try a new USB cable first. If this does not work, and if you have access to an old PC (with a parallel port and printer cable), you may want to test the printer's parallel port that way before you invest in a USB-to-parallel adapter. Also, since USB devices themselves usually require some kind of driver (available or extra), a certain USB-to-parallel adapter may or may not work with your Macs.
A small print server (with an Ethernet port for the computer connection and a parallel port to the printer) can use TCP/IP, and should not have a driver problem per se (printer drivers would be needed, though). Instead of connecting directly by Ethernet to a computer, one could wire the print server to one of the LAN ports of a Wi-Fi router (thus allowing wireless access to the printer from a computer).
All this would be experimental. Good luck! Do not hesitate to post back if you have any questions.

Hi Jan, all great suggestions. I did run a test page and it worked fine. I have a feeling the connection is the problem. Both computers' USB ports are OK, so I'm going to get a new USB cable or USB-to-parallel adapter and see if that works. Thanks so much for the parallel port suggestion! It's not something I would have thought of.

Hi Jan,
I appreciate your advice on this as I'm not very knowledgeable. Someone (was it you?) mentioned "software settings" in an earlier post, so I checked my system information on the MacAir and found the following post under "disabled software":
TXAEAV5RN4 - com.epson.print.kext.USBPrintClass:
Version: 2.7.3
Reason: No User Consent
Date Disabled: Unknown
I don't remember seeing this before, although several different versions are listed and all of them say the same thing. I downloaded and installed the updated driver information from Epson a couple days ago, but the printer still won't work. How can I correct this "user consent" situation?
I have no extra printer cables or wireless equipment and would need to purchase a USB cable (which I imagine can be returned if it doesn't work).
Incidentally, I tried to reinstall my original printer software and the MacAir can't read it. (There's no way to install it on the old MacBook because that media player isn't functioning. The disabled software box is blank in the older Mac's system info.)
Thanks, I've done that and it still doesn't work. I have a feeling it's the printer and not the Mac, because it doesn't work on my old Mac either and it used to. Will contact Epson support.
