What exactly is 2 factor authentication?

Two factor is an extra layer of security on your account. Because somebody will need a code sent to something that belongs to you, without this code they cannot log into your account on an a device Apple does not recognize. This means if somebody learns what your password is, they still can't get into your account.

What do I need for 2 factor authentication?

You also ask what you need for two factor.

You need something that can receive a code. This is either a trusted device Apple knows is secure and is yours, or a telephone number (even a landline).

Two-Factor authentication is a mechanism to secure your Apple ID.

It makes it so a code is required when logging in to your Apple ID on a new device or Apple website.

The code will be sent to your trusted device, in this case your iPad.
