Low Sound Input in Voice Memos and Notability on iPad Air 4

On my iPad Air 4 when I try to record a sound on the Voice Memos or Notability app my device picks up a highly muffled version of what I try to record and the bar that shows you what is currently recording barely moves.

However when I take a video on the Camera app I don’t have any problems with the sound input and it records sounds correctly.

Anything I can try to fix this?

iPad Air, iPadOS 17

Are you using a screen protector or case? If so, try removing them.

Most (f not all) models of iPad have multiple microphones - some models including a pinhole microphone aperture adjacent to the front facing camera - this being in the centre of the long-edge of the screen bezel. Some screen protectors or cases can cover one or more of the iPad's microphones.
