Why is iPhone 14 Pro video recording audio quiet and muffled?

iPhone 14 Pro – Camera App Audio Becomes Very Quiet and Muffled During Recording (Voice Memos Perfect)

I’m using an iPhone 14 Pro on latest iOS (26.1) and I’m having a consistent audio issue only in video recording apps.

Whenever I record video using:

  • Default Camera app

  • Blackmagic Camera app

…the audio starts normally, but then randomly becomes extremely quiet and muffled, and sometimes goes back to normal again. This happens every single time I record, on both front and rear cameras.

However, the microphones seem to work perfectly in other apps:

  • Voice Memos = perfect audio

  • ReLens, TikTok = perfect audio

The quiet/muffled audio in iPhone 14 Pro video recordings is almost certainly due to software processing of the internal microphones — dynamic gain control or noise reduction in the Camera framework — rather than a hardware problem. Workarounds include changing Mic Mode to Standard, using a third-party app that bypasses processing, using an external mic, or resetting settings. Apple is aware that certain iOS updates have triggered this, so a fix may come in a future iOS release.
