Resolution issue with display extending from MacBook Pro to Mini+Studio Display

MacBook Pro, M1 Pro, 14.1.2

Mac Mini, M2 Pro, 14.1.2

I'm using the Display settings to wirelessly extend the MacBook's display to the Mini's Studio Display.

In the Display's settings, when I select the Mini/Studio Display the selected resolution is "1920x1080 (Default)". This is the highest resolution I can select for the extended display. "Show all resolutions" is enabled.

Problem is, this resolution is too low, so anything I drag from the MacBook's display over to the Studio Display is too large and slightly fuzzy. Certainly the Studio Display supports higher resolution.

What's strange is yesterday when I first tried this, there were higher resolutions available in the list. Oddly, one of the higher res options was tagged as "low", even though it's higher than the default and it did yield the correct scaling on the Studio Display. But now that option has vanished for reasons unknown.

Thoughts?

Yes, a 27" 5K Studio Display does. That does not mean that the same holds for the software connection method known as AirPlay to Mac. I read on a third-party site that it is limited to

  • 1280 x 720
  • 1920 x 1080
  • 2560 x 1440 (low resolution, not a Retina "UI looks like 2560 x 1440" mode with 5K-level detail)
  • 3840 x 2160

Well, the mystery continues. I went to use the feature this morning and the higher resolutions for the Studio Display were suddenly available once more in the Displays settings of my MacBook. I assumed it got fixed by the 14.2 update.

Nope. I later disabled display extending to use my desktop for a while, and when I switched display extending back on, the higher resolution options for the Studio Display were gone again.

I have to assume this some sort of bug. Somehow the OS is not recognizing all the available resolutions consistently.
