Update required to download photos to mac

When I try to download photos from my iOS 17 phone to my 10.13 (High Sierra) Mac, I am told I need to update the Mac. I cannot update beyond 10.13 without losing my photo printer whose drive is no longer supported.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.13

Do you get a message like this? It's one when either the macOS or iOS gets updated/upgraded by itself and an update is needed to connect the two systems.

Did you get this? If so connect your iPhone again and click Install.
