New Mackbook Pro hangs

I have never had a Macbook before, this one has the 16" retina display, M2 chip, 32GB of RAM and 1TB of disk space. It is a US$3,500 machine.

The OS is up-to-date:

ProductName: macOS

ProductVersion: 14.1.2

BuildVersion: 23B92

Still the machine freezes now and then.

After frozen for a while it just restarts and attempts to re-open applications

Of course you loose all you were working on

I come from linux world and am amazed that this happens and I am highly annoyed

How can I troubleshoot what is going on and prevent this from happening?

I am used to a stable operating system

Best Regards

Fernan

I am also from the Linux world, and I ran Linux on Intel machines. I too am used to stable OSs/distros.

Anyway, as you already know, when you upgrade to a new OS, we cannot expect the 3rd party apps to be up to date with the new OS/distro. So, check on the 3rd party apps and upgrade them manually. If you have 3rd party modifier apps (those that promise all kinds of abilities of modifying the macOS), VPNs, antivirus apps, uninstall them. Also, check in System Settings > Login Items > disable and delete every app there. After that cleaning up, shut down your MacBook, wait a while and reboot it. Most probably, most of the problems would go away.

As you are from the Linux world, you are sure to know the command line, so have a look here, Terminal User Guide for Mac – Apple Support (UK)

By the way, because I am from the Linux world, I bought an Intel MBP as my first MacBook. Even though it is ~ 4 1/2 years old, Sonoma updates work very well with it.
