System storage is 80% of HD size

How to I reduce my system storage? I have already moved my pics to iCloud and deleted much of email and applications, but they do not show a change in the storage GB numbers.

First, when checking your storage it is best to use Disk Utility because it will give you an accurate report. Here is some additional information which may be helpful. Below are some things you can do to clear space on your HD:

• Empty the Trash in the Dock. 

• Empty the trash in the Photos app.

• Delete unused and unneeded installers from your downloads folder, Applications folder and desktop.

• Transfer files to an external drive. Files that take up the most room are movies, images and music. External drives are inexpensive and easily connected with a vendor provided USB cable. It may have to first be reformatted, though. This action will solve your problem.

• Force Time Machine to delete local snapshots:
