Query regarding the new apple pencil USB-C

Hi! I own an ipad 10th and I wish to purchase the new 2023 apple pencil USB-C. However, I have one query. I use a case on my ipad that covers all the edges of my ipad but it has space for storing the pencil. I read on Apple's official website that the new apple pencil enters sleep mode to conserve battery life if attached magnetically to the ipad.

My question is: If I store the pencil without magnetically attaching it to my ipad, will it keep running and draining the battery? Is there is a functionality for the pencil to go into sleep mode automatically after a certain period of non-use?

Please answer this question as if there is no such functionality, the pencil will keep draining its battery and I'll have to charge it again and again. Thank you so much for your time.

When an Apple Pencil has been set-down and remains motionless, the Pencil will enter a low-power condition where its bluetooth radio and electronics are shut-off to save power. When motion is sensed by the Pencil's internal accelerometer, the Pencil will enable its radio and electronics. When being carried, the Pencil will therefore remain active and will consume power.

Magnetically docking the USB-C Pencil with the iPad will place the Pencil in its ultra-low power state - with its accelerometer disabled. While docked, the Pencil will consume negligible power.

You should note that unlike the second generation Pencil, the USB-C Pencil cannot be inductively charged from the iPad's magnetic charging port; pairing and charging is only possible using the Pencil's USB charging port.

You're very welcome.

While the Pencil remains motionless, the Pencil will consume negligible power - but the slightest movement will "wake" the Pencil.

Insofar as has been established, the only difference in docking the USB-C Pencil with the magnetic dock of the iPad is that the internal accelerometer and associated control circuitry (that wakes the Pencil) are fully disabled - preventing the Pencil from waking-up with movement.

If you are considering a new Apple Pencil, consider the additional benefits of the second generation Pencil over the new USB-C Pencil:

  • The second generation can be paired and charged directly from the iPad's magnetic charging dock - without any need for a USB-C charging cable.
  • The second generation Pencil also has pressure sensitivity and tap feature selection - these functions being absent in the cheaper USB-C Pencil.

As such, the second generation Pencil offers more functionality than the cheaper USB-C Pencil.
