Sorting & ordering after Merge All Windows
I'm a video professional and I use the Merge All Windows function to review my footage after opening multiple files. But the windows get sorted randomly which is a PITA because I can't review my footage in chronological order. I couldn't see anything about this online, so I typed this into Bard:
In MacOS I merge all windows in Quicktime. But they are sorted at random from left to right. Is there a way I can order them from left to right, other than manually?
This was Bard's response - what do you think?
Unfortunately, there is no native way to order merged QuickTime windows from left to right in macOS, other than dragging them manually. However, there are a few workarounds and alternative options you can explore:
1. Third-party apps:
- BetterSnapTool (BST): This app allows you to customize window snapping behavior, including specific positioning like left and right halves. You can set up a rule for merged QuickTime windows to automatically snap to the left and right sides when merged.
- Spectacle: This free and open-source app offers similar window management features as BST, including predefined layouts and snapping options. You can use its layout tools to arrange your merged QuickTime windows side-by-side.
2. Scripting:
If you are comfortable with scripting, you can create a custom AppleScript or Automator workflow to automatically arrange merged QuickTime windows from left to right. This approach requires some technical knowledge and may not be suitable for everyone.
3. Alternative video editing apps:
Consider using other video editing apps like iMovie or Final Cut Pro that offer more control over window arrangement and project organization. These apps typically allow you to save specific layouts and workspaces for easier project management.
4. Manual sorting:
While not ideal, you can still manually drag and drop the merged QuickTime windows to organize them in the desired order. This might be the quickest solution if you only need to do this occasionally.
Here are some additional tips:
- Use Mission Control: Mission Control provides a grid-like overview of all your open windows. You can use this to visually drag and drop your merged QuickTime windows to the desired positions.
- Organize your desktop: Keeping your desktop organized with minimal clutter can make it easier to manage multiple windows and find the specific ones you need.
- Merge windows strategically: When merging QuickTime windows, consider the order you want them to appear in the final arrangement. This can help you minimize the need for manual sorting later.
Remember to choose the solution that best fits your technical skills and workflow preferences.
