iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd Gen) dead - Apple Genius said nothing they can do

My dad’s iPad Pro 12.9 (2nd gen) was bought from Apple directly and was a refurbished iPad in 2019. Couple of days ago (dec 2023) it made a fuse popping sound and died and now won’t turn back on and won’t charge and all suggestions from Apple failed.

Went into the Apple Store, the guy working tried to do all tests and it failed. He said it’s dead and to get a new one and that they can’t help or do anything more. Shocked us a little as it’s an expensive item and only been used 1-2 hours a day since he got it and now apple saying they won’t help. It confused me more as he said they don’t do repairs or support this iPad but online says they do.

Another thing is that since my Dad got the iPad it’s been slightly weird. Would freeze sometimes, or apps would freeze half way closing or jumping about. My Dad didn’t flag this to them and ignored this and now I’m thinking it was faulty since he got it especially as a refurbished iPad.

Is that it? No more support from Apple? No replacement? I can see in US they can replace it out of warranty for a charge but apparently no help for UK customers?

I am going to contact Apple via the phone later today but just wanted to hear what others experienced and if it was true that they won’t help anymore.

For practical purposes, in lieu of repairing and returning your own iPad, Apple usually exchange an iPad in need of repair for a renewed/refurbished iPad of the same model and specification. As such, when your iPad was previously "refurbished", you will have received an iPad that had already been repaired for some other reason.

If your "refurbished" iPad has now failed - and is beyond its warranty - unless you have benefit of an active AppleCare plan, an out-of-warranty repair (if offered) will be expensive. Given that your iPad has already been assessed by Apple, your options appear to be limited.

When accepting a refurbished item, always consider that you are receiving an item that has been returned and likely repaired for a fault. While equivalent to the item that you will be surrendering in exchange for the refurbished device, it is very unlikely to be new.
