Then it may be possible that this one has failed. If you haven't already, see if it will work with another Mac. If you don't have one, see if you can ask a friend or relative to use theirs'. Otherwise, you can also take it to your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them take a look and provide you with your optios.
No, they are not discontinued. Apple still sells them. <<< That link also provides the list of compatible Apple devices that can work with this drive.
I have the non powdered hub sold by Apple and I tried that and I also attached it directly. Both did not allow a disk to load or work. I then tried a powered hub. Same result…not loading or booting up or being recognized by my MacBook Air.
