Ring volume goes to maximum for no reason on my iPhone

This has been happening for over a year on at least my iPhone 13 Pro Max and 15 Pro Max.

The symptom: randomly a few times a week I discover that my ring/alert volume has been changed to 100% without my interaction. (usually when my phone rings and scares the heck out of me.)

  • I have always kept the Ring/alert volume “Change with buttons” setting OFF, because I can’t imagine who would ever want that volume level fluctuating constantly — I always want it at about 15%.
  • I wondered if this was my fault as I use Shortcuts automations sometimes, but Shortcuts automations have no ability to set the RING volume at all. (Frankly if they did I would try setting it to fix the ring volume twice a day.)
  • Please note that the Media volume is different than ring/alert volume. They are two separate volume levels and aren’t tied. You can have ring volume set to 1% and listen to a video or music at 100%. If you don’t believe me try it yourself.
  • I do have never heard of any mechanism whatsoever where iOS is meant to alter the ring/alert volume level for any reason at all. If anyone can find documentation of such a thing I’m all ears.
  • Another discussion here where dozens of people experienced this linked it to Bluetooth or CarPlay usage. I do use CarPlay nearly daily, but my volume problem recurs more like twice a week. I also use Bluetooth audio, mainly headphones and occasionally a speaker. That thread also had many people saying that turning “Change with Buttons” off helped, however that wasn’t universal.

Since I have found threads on this same bug 3-4 years old, I am sure Apple will keep ignoring this forever, but I’m so sick of an EAR SPLITTING ringer when I least expect it. So I’m posting it again in case anyone else ever finds a workaround.

Apple, fix your OS. Seriously. The only way I can escape this would be to nuke my entire Apple account, change my identity and start over again. Do something about this. I’ll come to Cupertino and let you examine my device. I just want this stupid bug fixed.

No reply? Have you found a solution? I even tried toggling the "change with buttons" slider to ON, rebooted my phone, switched the slider back to OFF, rebooted my phone again. It STILL keeps doing it. Every single day this week. I'll turn the notification volume back down to where I want it, and the next time my alarm goes off it's back to full blast. Scares the crap out of my entire family every single time - I even get clawed by the furball if he's on my lap when it goes off. It's getting to be absolutely infuriating! I don't use CarPlay but I do use Bluetooth earbuds. Either way, that would be asinine if that's what it is. And what's the solution to that - never use Bluetooth with my iPhone? Ridiculous!
