You need a user/admin password on the Mac.
—weather you decide to use it on login or not is an option however
Reset your Mac login password - Apple Support
macOS User Guide - Apple Support
If you can't reset your Mac login password
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212190
Let know if you are successful or continue to have an issue…
If this is brand new out of the box— call your store where you bought it—
Local USA—
Store List - Apple Store - Apple
Around the World
Choose your country or region - Apple
If you are trying to set up AppleID— you can pass it up and do it later

To be specific during the Mac's setup process you are required to create a user ID with a password. This process creates a user account for you. Since you do not know that password you will be required to reset it and create a new one. This time I recommend that you write it down and store it in a safe place for future reference when needed.
