outlook and gmail apps not previewing emails on iphone

Two days ago my Outlook app would say "new message" instead of previewing my emails. I had not changed any of my phone's settings, nor had I touched the app's settings before it happened. I tried to figure out how to change it back but couldn't do it. Then I woke up yesterday and everything was back to normal. Then the same thing happened today but with my Gmail app. I don't understand what is going on or how to fix it. I have the iPhone 14 pro and just updated my phone to ios 17.2 and still have the "new message" notification rather than a preview of the email from my Gmail app.
