Personal Hotspot Broken in iOS 17.2

I installed 17.2 on my 15 Pro Max and noticed that nothing can connect to the personal hotspot. It turns on and attempts a connection but can’t seem to give out an IP. I’ve seen others on Reddit with this problem and nobody has found a fix yet. I’m guessing there is a bug with the DHCP server. Has anyone else had this?

As soon as I updated the iOS 17 the hotspot stop sharing Internet with my Wi-Fi repeater. After some troubleshooting I figured it out.

For some reason iOS 17 is using the new 192.0.0.1 protocol with no subnet mask but a lot of the older devices don’t work with no mask.

Remembering what IP address was for hotspot IP in iOS 16 i manually entered this address into my old device and Internet started working.

So your device IP address range is 2 thru 15

So pick an ending number that isn’t busy or being used and we will use that number.

I configured my old device too:

IP: 172.20.10.2

Mask: 255.255.255.240

Router: 172.20.10.1

DNS: 172.20.10.1

Boom! Working great again.

Configure the next device that needs to connect to your hotspot with the next sequential number, in this case my next device would be 172.20.10.3

Have fun

  • I have an iPhone 15, not a 12, so it’s eSIM and can’t be moved
  • I use the hotspot daily, I know it’s carrier configured
  • Rebooting and resetting network settings does not resolve

This same bug happened when iOS 13 was released 4 years ago. The DHCP server for the hotspot is not giving out IP addresses. However if you manually set an IP on the client then it will work.

FWIW, I briefly connected to the hotspot this morning with default settings and got 192.0.0.2 with gw 192.0.0.1. Then it got disconnected and was not able to reconnect.

After turning off/on hotspot/wifi a few times, I then check with Wireshark again - again, got OFFER from 172.20.10.1 but the client IP offered was 0.0.0.0 - hence the problem. Anyway, the workaround again worked, but Apple needs to be fix this ASAP.

Despite your attempts at various methods, you have yet to explore the crucial step of utilizing the SIM card from your iPhone 12 Pro in alternative devices. This is because the functionality of a Hotspot is contingent upon the carrier rather than the specific device in use.

Please see the pic below to make it clearer that Hotspot is enabled by a Carrier on one SIM and not by the other Carrier in the same iPhone (Dual SIM).

Use these steps first

Restart the iPhone or iPad that provides Personal Hotspot and the other device that needs to connect to Personal Hotspot. Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS. On the iPhone or iPad that provides Personal Hotspot, go to Settings > General > Reset, then tap Reset Network Settings.

If Personal Hotspot is not working on your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi

Also, check the following

  1. Network coverage and stability
  2. Data Balance
  3. On your windows (See if WiFi Auto Joins is enabled)
  4. Also, check if you have any stronger WiFi signal around your computer.

Ask the Carrier to change the SIM if nothing works.
