More on: Security and Privacy pane crashing system preferences on Catalina

Regarding “Security and privacy pane crashing system preferences on Catalina”. The original question is from over two years ago; I finally solved this problem a couple of weeks ago. Here are my notes:

THE PROBLEM:

I'm using my Mac mini 6,2 (Late 2012) with macOS 10.15.7 (and its Security Updates), the latest OS this model can use.

When I try to launch the Security & Privacy System Preference, I always get a spinning wait cursor. All of System Preferences becomes unusable. Force-quitting System Preferences is the only way to get out and return to System Preferences.

I tried literally every possible solution I could find on the Internet, including reformatting and reinstalling the OS several times over the years, and have had no luck.

My SOLUTION:

1. I started up my Mac from a drive that was not my Main Drive.

2. I reformatted my Main Drive.

3. I used Apple's macOS Recovery over the internet to reinstall a fresh copy of the latest version of macOS that's compatible with my 2012 Mac mini (10.15.7) — onto my Main Drive.

4. I restarted the Mac using my Main Drive as the startup Disk.

And here, I learned, is the ULTIMATE, NECESSARY STEP that's the entire key to all of the problems I had been having with this Mac: I did NOT install the Apple Security Updates that my Mac then wanted me to install. By not allowing that install, I was FINALLY able to access the MOST INCREDIBLY CRUCIAL SYSTEM PREFERENCE which is the secret to almost everything on the Mac, including installing much software: the SECURITY & PRIVACY System Preference.

IMHO, there is something amiss in those Security Updates that screws up the Security & Privacy System Preference. I hope not installing the Security Updates doesn't cause problems down the road but I seem to have no choice in the matter. Now all I have to do is ignore the constant whining of my Mac trying to get me to install those updates.

For the (hopefully) few of you with this problem, I hope this helps.

Thank you. I uninstalled Avast using their uninstaller, restarted my Mac, ran EtreCheckPro again. It reported two remaining Avast “scheduling” files -- I wish I had recorded the names of them -- which I deleted, then restarted my Mac, then ran EtreCheckPro again, the report of which is attached to this doc.

After reading the article about Avast's unethical behavior (thanks for that info), I'm not going to reinstall Avast but am going to uninstall it on my Windows PC and iPhone. And I'll not renew when my trial period ends.

In the last couple of days I found that as long as I don't run BOINC, my Mac acts very well.

Uninstall Avast per their directions , then run etrecheck again to see what chaff it left...

You may have to delete this file also & restart after removing Avast...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

Apple hid the Users' Library folders...

Method 1:

  1. From the Finder, select the Go menu at top of the screen, and choose Go to Folder.
  2. In the window that opens, enter ~/Library, and click Go.

Or…

Use the Command-Shift-. toggle in Finder to show or to hide hidden files and folders

After having installed the Security Updates, I restarted the Mac in Safe Boot Mode, then tried again to launch the Security & Privacy System Pref. I got the same thing: spinning wait cursor, all of System Prefs becoming inaccessible, no way to get into Security & Privacy, forced to force-quit System Prefs (and still no way to get into Security & Privacy).

If your Mini works for you and you don't need whatever 10.15.7 offers, I'd definitely keep the status quo! I have no idea what the supposed advantages are of 10.15.7 over 10.13.6. I'm glad you're not having problems with your 2019 iMac.

Pretty bizarre, & we don't see any other reports of this, much less millions of them, so couple of suggestions...

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Use the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...

Try one of these two…

You can use Drive DX to possibly get a better view of Drive health…

Thanks to Jack-19…

It may be wise to run SMART Utility to check the drives' health.

Hello and thanks for the utility recommendations and for all of your help.

I spent a few hours gathering those utilities and doing various configuring routines and running the utilities and ended up with the following; I don’t know which ones you’d want to see:

1. EtreCheckPro Report with Mac in Default Mode

2. EtreCheckPro Report with Mac in Safe Boot Mode

3. Smart Utility Drive Report of my internal "Samsung SSD 850 PRO 512GB Media" drive

4. DriveDxReport of the same drive in #3 above (note: it was my main drive up until a few weeks ago when it suddenly developed horrible write speeds, I don’t trust or use it anymore)

5. DriveDxReport of my "SP SPCC Solid State Disk Media" drive which I use for backups (in addition to DropBox)

I have another drive, my "SanDisk Extreme SSD Media" drive which is my Mac’s main drive. I couldn’t get either app to give me a report on it, despite running the utility to add something that I don’t remember (a SMART driver?).

This Main drive and the Backup drive in #5 are both external SSDs which the Smart Utility app wouldn’t report on. The one internal SSD is the one I mentioned I don’t trust. USB 3.0 is fast enough for my external SSDs; I’m not going to mess around replacing the untrustworthy internal SSD.

My primary computer is actually a modern, very fast Windows 11 PC (despite my having owned and loved Macs since my first one, a new “Fat Mac” 512ke in 1986, back when an educational discount meant something). If I had the financial abilities now, I’d buy an Apple refurbished Mac mini to replace my old one.
