Why can't I send Apple Cash on Messages with my brand new $2400 MacBook Pro??

I am frustrated to find that I cannot send my kid Apple Cash with my brand new MacBook Pro. I just updated from an Intel MacBook fully expecting to be able to use this service on a modern laptop with Touch ID. I see no reason other than "because," and I must say this is not a satisfying answer.

Okay, done with the rant portion of this post. Does anyone know of a Mac-based workaround? I am not an iPhone user and don't intend to become one.
