iTunes stuck at 'sync' stage after iPhone 12 Pro updated to IOS 7.2

I recently updated my iPhone 12 Pro IOS to 17.2 the other day and now when I connect the iPhone 12 Pro to iTunes on my iMac, iTunes get stuck 'syncing' the phone at step 2 of 4. This is very frustrating as everything was working happily before the phone update and now I cannot back-up or sync my iPhone in iTunes.

I'm running a rather old iMac (2009) which is running Mac OS 10.13.6 High Sierra. I have not been able to update the OS beyond this for a while but the iMac runs well although some functionality has been lost to to the age of the computer.

iTunes version is 12.8.3.1 but I know this is not the latest version of iTunes but I'm not being prompted to update on my iMac. I expect that is due to the OS level on my iMac.

Any ideas on how to fix this please? i.e. iPhone sync in iTunes getting stuck.

I had the same problem with iOS 17.2 on iPhone 14 and syncing to iTunes on Mojave.

The solution was to Open the Activity Monitor app and Force Quit "MDCrashReportTool", syncing should proceed just fine after that.

Unfortunately it seems that process starts back up with every sync, so prepare to do this a lot...

I unpaired my watch from the phone, and it allowed sync to finish without having to force quit the MDCrashReportTool. Paired the watch again, using an old backup, Sync stopped working again. Unpaired and then re-paired as a 'new watch' and then uninstalled all of the 'non apple' watch apps from it (using the watch app on my iphone), and sync works. So that seems to indicate that it's one or more of the watch apps that I've been using, some of which may be older. So, now just need to determine which of those is the offending watch app. Wish that Apple would give some error feedback on issues like this, during sync or watch setup. Using IOS 17.2.1, Mac OS sonoma 14.2.1, Watch OS 10.2, for what it's worth...

I spoke to Apple Support three times regarding this issue. There appears to be no solution other than deleting the crash report. It doesn’t appear that anybody at Apple is working on a fix either. I write that as this issue appears to have been around for years. This said I have only had since updating to OS 14 and 17 on my Mac and iPhone respectively.

Heres my beef with the situation. I’ve been using iTunes since before the iPhone came out. My music collection is extensive I have spent thousands in the iTunes Store. And hours importing my old CDs and vinyl to iTunes.

To now be unable to flawlessly sync my music from my Mac to my iPhone is bonkers. It’s a core feature. I’m not technical and don’t want to be going into a back end process to delete a task that is trying to report the fact the software is not working to the people that made it. (And the devices it’s running on).

I don’t want to spend anymore time on chat with customer support. For the record both the reps I spoke to and the supervisor who called me back were extremely polite and helpful.

I do want somebody at Apple to confirm the issue is being addressed and the timeline of the release that will fix it.

Thanks.

Another possible work-around. Has anyone tried turning off their watch before syncing? I've kept my watch off while syncing for the past two days, and it's gone through without me having to force quit MDCrash. Tomorrow, I plan on turning off WiFi / Cellular / Bluetooth on my phone to see if that is another workaround. Maybe the problem only occurs if the phone and watch are in communication with one another?

I posted this yesterday, but it looks like I did something wrong. Apologies if this is a double post.

I have reached out to AppleSupport about this. I didn't get connected to an engineer, but the person I spoke to said that yes, Apple is aware of this issue.

Hopefully, they address this soon. I use music daily.

Yes, Apple Support should know about the issue since it has been around for approximately 15 years. Sadly, I do not think we'll see an update forthcoming.

For a summary of the issue (shameless plug to follow), I've compiled info from multiple message threads into a single post: Summary of Issues: MDCrashReportTool, Backup, Sync, Preparing to Sync

When you're in Windows Task Manager and don't know what a process is, right click on it and you will be given the option to "search on line". Select this and online information will be provided.
Information like what does the "Mobile Device Crash Report Tool" do?
Maybe "Extracts log reports from the device and submits them to Apple (if selected)"?
About iTunes for Windows background processes – Apple Support (UK)

I think you need the luck more than I do.
Hope you get it.

erksworld, thanks for your response and for sharing.

IMHO, getting information from Microsoft about an Apple process is not my idea of viewing the code to see what it does. While the info may be accurate, it is still too high level for what the process actually does.

Thanks for the good luck wishes. Whatever good comes our way will hopefully benefit us all.
