Font Book shows font repertoire but won't print many glyphs even with get selection, copy, paste

Font Book shows Zapfino catalog but only very basic letters will type the actual glyph. I haven't found any variations, which are shown in the actual repertoire, which will print more than the basic letter: not in Zapfino.

I have pushed the copy button that shows up in the popup when selecting the letter, but it still only pastes either a dot or a basic Zapfino but not the variation.

Is there a place one must download something extra? Why show unusable letters?
