Apple Watch SE won’t update

I have the latest update for my phone. My watch says I need to update phone first. It already is. It has been like this since the last update. Help.

With an iPhone 8 that can only be updated to iOS 16, watchOS is the most you can update the watch to. WatchOS 10 requires iPhone Xs or later with iOS 17 or later.

Same issue with iPhone 8 and Watch series 7. Replies provided were helpful. Will look to get newer phone. My iPhone 8 is also sporadic with cellar data connection.
