My MacBook Pro was working great when I shipped it back but I received a message saying they changed the value to $0 as it wouldn't restore. I only traded it in cuz I wanted an updated one. It was valued at $850. I would have resold it myself but I thought I was doing the right thing. I asked them to send it back. But what is the recourse on that?

Assuming you attempted to trade in your old Mac directly with Apple, I'd suggest bringing it to your nearest Apple Store and explain your issue to them. Sometimes they'll make it right, as the third party Apple uses for trade-ins seems a bit sketchy to me.
is there any visible sign of damage on the shipping container? if so, file a complaint with the carrier.
You need to deal with the third party company you sent it to. Hopefully you took photos of it before sending it in? Contact Apple and file a complaint, no idea if that will do any good.
