Discrepancy in trade-in value for Macbook Pro

I purchased a new Macbook Pro based on a trade-in value of $240. I sent my 2018 in good, working condition to see a $40 value, saying there was a scratch. I had it returned to find no dings or scratches. What a racket. How do they get away with this? Guess they hope people won't go through the hassle of asking for their computer back.
