iPhone 15 Pro Stops Recording Video Around 30 minutes

When I am recording a video, my iPhone 15 pro will randomly stop recording. It seems to stop around the 30 minute mark. I don’t know if it shows a message because I record art demonstrations so the phone is up above my head. I have plenty of available storage, I have turned off ProRes, and it does not get hot.

UPDATE: Issue disappeared after updating iOS 17.4. Updated from mac. My case is been followed by a high level technician from Apple. We did several tests after update and all went 100% ok without stops. I recorded 3 futsal matches after it without interruptions.

Hi all!

I am recoding EVERY DAY using ONLY iPhones. I had the same problem and here's how I solved it: I removed the case and I positioned the phone just like you see in the pictures. Basically, leave the buttons and the antenna band (I guess that's what it is) uncovered, untouched. Since I did this, the iPhones are not stopping recording anymore and I do record sometimes 80 minutes uninterrupted. I hope this helps!

You may try some of these steps, please check after each step...

  1. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  2. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.
  3. Make sure you have the latest updates installed.
    1. Update Over-the-Air (OTA) —> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (IN)
    2. Update using iTunes/Finder —> Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

Ok so I have an update…but you guys aren’t going to like it. I went to the Apple Store on my return date and told them about the problem and told them I’d like to try a new iPhone 15.

They ran all the diagnostics and the hardware seemed fine, so they agreed to swap the phone out only once.

So I tested this new phone 3 times so far at 4k 60. The first two times it lasted an hour before I shut it off myself. The 3rd time it lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes before I shut it off myself. This last test was also on maximum brightness for a real stress test.

So ya not sure what to think. I’m glad the issue seems to be gone but I’m still afraid it may rear its ugly head again.

Also I did all 3 tests with my phone naked.

When I had my previous 15 I did all the tests with my cheap spigen $12 case. I am now wondering if the case was causing some sort of problem? I am kind of afraid to test it with the case on lol I don’t want to mess it up I kind of just want to get a different case.

I will do two more tests and if they both last over an hour I will consider the phone to be fine.

My first 15 pro max failed at 14 minutes the first time I recorded 4k60. Then 12 minutes the second time. Then it made it an hour the 3rd time. Then 35 minutes the next time.

So this phone is clearly an improvement, but ya I wish I could get the old phone back so I could test it without a case.

Update: I recorded 3 videos today of my daughter’s volleyball roughly 55 minutes each with no issue. I took a ton of steps and I’ll start to introduce them back to see if I can find a common factor or if it’s just software.

Second thing I did was used a non MagSafe case. Third thing was turned off cellular, turned off blue tooth and WiFi and put my phone in do not disturb mode. FINGERS CROSSED.

Same - I purchased this specifically as an investment for content creation and I now have no trust in the reliabilty of the device for capturing my stuff. It's beyond frustating to go all out doing a fantastic take of a piece of choreo to find that it stopped 3/4 the way through! I thought I'd solved the problem as I'd noticed that the last time it did it, whilst Airplane was enabled, WiFi was still active too. So next time I made sure absolutely everything was off (no wifi, mobile data, no bluetooth, DND on and also setting my screen to never autolock) hey presto it was fine for 2 occasions recording a whole hour (sadly not important stuff as it was a test) but today - with the important stuff, stopped after 11 minutes and then 41 minutes for NO reason. This is beyond annoying.

I record basketball games every week , mine also stops at random intervals, it happens so often that it is extremely annoying and sometimes I would lose important footages because camera would freeze for 5-10 sec before you can start recording a new video. Already tried all the resetting and restarting but did not solve the issue. Apple needs to fix this !

Same here in the UK. Purchased iPhone 15 Pro in November 23 with 256gb of data, specifically for the purpose of recording on demand fitness content. Phone will randomly stop recording on all variations of resolutions and frame rates. Sometimes after two to three minutes, sometimes ten, sometimes it will be fine for 20+ minutes. I'm getting really fed up of having to re-record content because it's stopped the first or second time around. I have plenty of storage and the phone is not overheating. It's been returned for a repair via John Lewis' appointed Apple people once already (just over 10 days ago) and they returned it saying they could not find any fault, yet on starting it up again - problems still happening. I now have several video recording to prove it happening. Updates, factory resets, reinstalling from fresh - not one of those steps has made any difference. I'm being told to return it again for a "repair". It's really unacceptable for such an expensive phone.
