I am trying to upgrade MacBook Pro 2017 to Ventura

I am upgrading from Catalina to Ventura. I guess that was a big mistake! My MacBook has been stuck trying to do it for 8 hours. Now it has a black screen without even the white progress bar (which never got past halfway). The screen is still back lit and the fan is still quietly running.

should I let it sit like this indefinitely and it will eventually finish whatever it is doing in the upgrade? Or should I shut the computer down and restart it? Or is Ventura just not going to work on my MacBook Pro 2017 15” and so need to somehow reload the from the latest Time Machine backup?

Is the computer listed as qualifying for macOS 13 Ventura?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

If Yes, after this long waiting, would suggest shutting down by any and all means including using the Power Button to force a shut down

Attach the Charger and pause

Start the computer In Safe Mode and without any external Drive attached to computer

This may or may not allow the upGrade Process to complete, hopefully successfully
