It works for imported clips which are 20 minutes long and I can see where to cut out my edited clips. Longer imported material I can’t see it clear enough to take clips. Is there a setting to change to zoom in on the long footage to find clips I need

If the zooming in and out that you do in the browser is not enough (and I can certainly see how making selections for very long clips in the browser is difficult) consider the “reverse favoriting” process.
Create a temporary project, add the long clip. It’s much easier to work in the timeline, make the desired selections, then you can use Shift-F to reveal in browser, and press F to mark as Favorite (or press Delete to mark as Reject).
On that point, if there are long breaks (like a 15 minute interval between two halves of a football game) you can reject that part and then if you choose “Hide Rejected” you automatically only see the non-rejected parts as if they were separate (and thus shorter) clips.

What computer are you using? Could you post a screenshot that shows the way the screen is arranged?

in final cut i am tring to take clips from sporting footage it is a 100 minute clip and i cant see it in viewer to take out the highlight clips i nee
