Mobile Data Error - The device fails cellular RF, eSim presence check, failed system cellular alert.

The device fails cellular RF, eSim presence check, failed system cellular alert.

I have an Iphone 13, which I bought brand new in March 2022. There was no issues with the phone, and worked perfectly but on 8th Dec 2023 (Phone is one year and 9 months old), I switched off the phone (around 09h00) for a function, and 2 hours later , I switched it back on.

I noticed that the Network signal for Mobile data was not "activating" or coming on.

  1. I switched it off and on again, as I thought that this would resolve the issue, and establish connection again - this did not work.
  2. I even removed the Sim card, and inserted it back. I tested the Sim card on another phone, and it works , so it was not the sim card.
  3. I then went into settings and noticed the Mobile data was disabled, and even tried to switch it back on, but it did not allow me to enable this function.
  4. I noticed an error in the settings which was Mobile Data error, and clicked on the error. The message said that I require a software update to enable Mobile Data - update was something like 17.01.01 and I was on software V16. I tried to perform the update, but the phone froze during installing, at verifying process.
  5. I called Apple support, and they also tried to perform the download as they said that I probably had a corrupted download. I still could not install the update.
  6. The iStore advised that I need to replace the rear system as my phone is failing to recognise the sim card to enable mobile data. They advised that this was a result of wear and tear, which I am not convinced as they were not convincing of what the error was , and what would have caused it. Its like they have never come across this issue before, and assured me that it was not a factory fault.
  7. They said that the phone is failing to recognise my sim card, but the issue is not with the sim card reader, but rather the component for the E-sim (what ever that means).
  8. My phone works fine via Wifi, and all apps work fine, its just the Mobile Data issue which means I cant make/receive calls, send/receive sms.

I wanted to know from the forum, if anyone has come across such an issue, and if the only solution is for me to replace the rear system.

I decided not to proceed with the rear system repair by Apple and I went to fetch my phone.

When I tested my phone (tip: make sure you never sign those acknowledgments before you actually check/test your phone when you receive it- They always tell you sign so that they can get your phone out the vault but the terms and conditions stipulate that you should only sign once you are satisfied with your phone)

So, since they had to open and test a "new" (or replaced part) rear system , when I switched my phone on, it got stuck on sim card registration and could not proceed .

Phone was deemed unusable, so Apple agreed to try and get it back to the state I brought it in (I.e workign with wifi)

so a few days after new years 2024, I fetched my phone (note: nothing was replaced on my phone) , and I tested the phone , and it works perfectly.

they said it might have been some software issue but they have no idea.

Very strange ,

From being told its definitely wear and tear to now a software issue,,,

we will never know

Hello, there is actually a self service repair website that Apple now offers here: Self Service Repair - Apple Support. I am not sure how tech savvy you are, I fix phones for a living btw, so I am not just some random person, lol.....If you use that, you can determine if you have a cellular RF issue. I have that same issue on my iPhone 12, and I fixed it by changing to an eSIM. Just food for thought : ) Apple is great at either getting you to spend a million dollars for a repair, or just buying a new phone instead, which is honestly why you should find a third party repair shop with good reviews, in the future. Good luck, and have a great day!!

I currently have an iPhone 13, brand new. Everything was working just fine until suddenly my Apple Pay stopped working at various stores. The apple support team said it was because my cellular RF sensor has failed?? Curious as to why it was working just fine with no issues, then decided to stop. I haven’t had this phone for no more than 2-3 months. The perk of Apple Pay is to use it for convenience & not physically carry my debit cards with me… what an inconvenience.
