iPhone SE 3 home button feels different and makes clicking sound

My iPhone SE 3’s home button sometimes feels very different and makes a loud clicking sound like a computer mouse clicking. When this happens, the haptic feedback goes dead and the speakers will make screeching sounds when I type instead of the little tapping sounds. I’ll admit that I have dropped this phone multiple times in the past. I am also not on iOS 17.2.1 yet, I’m still on 17.0 but I’m working on clearing space so I can download the update. I don’t know if it’s software related or a hardware issue but it’s happened a lot today. I’d appreciate the help and any further action I’d need to take for this problem.

Hello,

Given that you've mentioned dropping the phone multiple times, there might be physical damage affecting the home button and other components. Inspect the exterior of your iPhone for any visible damage, and pay attention to the home button area.

Thanks for the tip. From inspection, there does not seem to be any visible damage to the home button or surrounding screen glass. This problem only occurs sparingly and only for about 20 minutes or less, then the home button feels fine and the haptics start working again. I’ll keep an eye on the problem for a while and monitor the home button for issues that may occur.

I had the same problem and it was very frequent. I took the phone to the Apple Store and they couldn't find any problem in the phone's software or hardware. After a very unsatisfactory result, my phone was replaced after multiple visits to the Apple Store. But, the replaced device also faced the SAME problem within a month to which I still haven't been given a solution. Apple needs to step and own to the issues that the customers are having because they clearly aren't. One of the employees at the Genius Bar even lied about the warranty policies to me. IT WAS PRETTY BAD. After lying the person just left. LIKE WHAT???

when I asked for the employee's name no one told me. THAT WAS A BAD EXPERIENCE! APPLE YOU NEED TO STEP UP!
