randomly twice this morning my mac keyboard has suddenly changed to typing scientific characters, i hit the m key and get µ and all the keys are like that. It suddenly changed back to english but now it is back again and I can't figure out how to get it back to normal english and why it changed.

When that happens it means the machine thinks you have the option key depressed. Perhaps it is sticking and your keyboard needs repair or replacement. Try an external keyboard.
