Keyboard typing strange symbols

Seemingly out of the blue, my new Mac´s keyboard is changing some keys to different symbols. For example, the "at" symbol usually employed when hitting shift and the 2 key, now creates quote symbols. Not all keys are affected, but many of the number-punctuation keys are not using standard US English. I followed the directions given in an earlier post, going into Keyboard settings and reselecting US English, but the problem persists.

You just have the wrong input source active. Go to system settings > keyboard > text input > edit > input sources and make sure there is only one item on the list, and that the name of that item is US or ABC. Use the minus button at the bottom to remove all other keyboards. My guess is that you have Spanish or something similar which needs to be removed.
