Gaming in my Rivian. M3 Max MBP 16 vs. 2022 Asus Zephyrs G14. “Lies of P” and “Elden Ring”.

Christmas weekend, and I’m at the beach with my adult siblings and we’re all trying to game together.

The computer(s) that I am using are the M3 Max MBP with the upgraded GPU/CPU core count, and my 2022 Asus Zephyrus G14 with AMD hardware. I tried downloading the new “Lies of P” game from the App Store, but I couldn’t download at more than 10MB/s. On the Asus, I was able to download Elden Ring in less than 5 minutes. Both downloads were connected to my Rivian’s Mobile Hotspot. On the Asus, downloading from Steam, I was able to maintain a download speed of about 160MB/s.

I cannot imagine why there is such a large difference in WiFi speeds.

The laptops were not attempting to download simultaneously. Each laptop would be completely shut off while the other was attempting to download.

We even did a speed test on each computer. Sure enough, it wasn’t just the game host servers that were causing the slowdown discrepancy. My Asus avg'd about 170MB/s down while the MacBook scored at abt 13MB/s.

@AppleSupport please address this issue. I was so impressed with my M3 Max right up until this point. I was so excited to try a real AAA Game natively on Mac. It would be ironic if the issues that we’re encountering trying to play “Lies of P” are because of Apple’s hardware.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.2

If you were connecting to the Internet through a High speed CABLE whose specs such as length, crosstalk and impedance were well controlled, using high quality standard cables such a Category 5 or Category 6, you MIGHT be able to says something about Apple hardware.

You are instead Broadcasting your signal over the air using radio signals, using channels that are open and Shared. EVERYTHING about its performance depends on exactly what else is around you -- your neighbors' Router sgnals WILL have profound impact on your Wi-Fi performance. Setting this up properly so as not to DIRECTLY clash with your neighbors data is essential. "It depends on your 'network neighborhood'".

It also depends on how far away your Router is from the computer, because radio signals drops off as the inverse CUBE of the distance, as the radio signal propagates in three dimensions.

Also, any construction materials or natural landscape items might be attenuating the signals.

Example: My home is solid masonry construction. I have determined experimentally that the attenuation of Wi-Fi signals when passing through a four-foot-think brick chimney makes the resulting signal unusable.

So this is NOT an Apple hardware issue, unless/until you are willing to do some troubleshooting to demonstrate that it is. This is also not competition from YOUR devices, because the Router polls each device in turn.
