when I try to open itunes I get a message that it cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. How do I cure this?

I deleted itunes due to the fact it was not recognizing my iphone. I reinstalled itunes and it would not open. I get a message that it cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. How do I cure this?
