exactly. same here. spoke to apple support again. there may be a problem with iOS 16.7.4 itself - possibly the iOs version was taken offline but they forgot to set automatic updates to point to an older iOS. advice was to try it again in a few days. maybe then we will already see iOS 16.7.5 ?!?

fighting the exact same issue and have been struggling with it for 2 days plus. extremely frustrating!!

see one of the problems is that if the phone is stuck on iOS 12.2. -> wireless iOS updates are not supported yet for that phone. so you need to connect the USB cable to a PC running iTunes or a Mac running iTunes or Finder (depending on the generation of the Mac). Since Big Sur came out -> iTunes doesnt work any more. Since Big Sur the iOs management for mobile devices runs via Finder.

I have tried everything:

  • update attempt via old macbook pro running big sur and connected phone via USB cable (update via finder) -> no joy. the error always just says:

there was a problem downloading the software for iPhone. the requested resource was not found.

  • update attempt via rather new Macbook Pro (M1 generation) running the newest OS Sonoma and connected phone via USB cable (update via finder) -> no joy.

there was a problem downloading the software for iPhone. the requested resource was not found.

  • update attempt via old Windows PC running Windows Professional and connected via USB cable (update attempt via iTunes) -> no joy. the error there is that the latest iTunes version possible to install on Windows 7 is too old to run the iOs update.
  • update attempt with iPhone X in recovery mode connected to macbook via usb cable -> no joy. the recovery mode did not help and did not install the newest 16.7.4 either.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Apple turned off or discontinued the download server hosting this iOS Version. Ist that possible ???

Oh did I mention that I tried different WifI networks, a mobile hotspot as well, restarting the wifi router?

Oh and did I mention I have 60 Gig of free space on this iphone? and did I mention it is charged to over 60% battery on each of these attempts?

Oh, did I forget to mention that I also called Apple Support in Ireland and they couldn't help either? They gave me a list of contacts of Apple service partners in my area. So I called one of them. They were not able to help me either.

If you have this problem you are apparently just left standing in the rain with your device that is stuck on an old OS. tough luck!!!

You cannot pick and choose an iOS version. What you get is Settings > General > Software update > [All options are available here]

Hi everyone,

I tried it again today by connecting the iPhone X (which was still stuck on 12.2) with the MacBook Pro (Sonoma) via usb cable and... lo and behold... the update from 12.2 to 16.7.4 was possible! the download was quite big and took several minutes. I think it may have been 6 GB - the good old iPhone X started updating nicely right after the download. iPhone rebooted ... and...

by the way - Apple Support did confirm over the phone that there had been an issue with this iOs version, which is why it was taken offline to get the bugfix.

Thank you Apple devs! I had almost given up hope
