iPhone 14 Pro Max - camera not genuine part

I have had a iPhone 14 Pro Max since they were released. When I updated my phone to iOS 17.2, my back camera stopped working in the camera app, but it worked in Snapchat. I restarted my phone, because sometimes Apple is terrible like that, and I was confronted with a message that my phone could not determine if the camera was a genuine Apple part/not functioning as expected.

Currently, the back camera works, but I have no option for the ultrawide camera and when I open the camera app it automatically opens to 2x zoom, which is just annoying. Clearly this was due to the 17.2 update, as everything was functioning perfectly before, and 17.2.1 did not fix it. After speaking with support, my only option is to get my camera replaced. With my work schedule and how I live at least an hour away from the nearest Best Buy and even further from an Apple Store, that is not possible for me.

Has anyone else had this problem, and did it ever resolve on its own?

A message about a non-genuine part is discussed in this support document: iPhone parts and service history - Apple Support

An Unknown Part message appears if the part installation is incomplete or if the part:

- Was replaced with a nongenuine part (e.g., you had it repaired with a third party service that did not use an Apple component)

- Was already used or installed in another iPhone

- Isn't functioning as expected

I too have this issue, took my phone to Apple, it passed all their tests, but I was told that I would have to get them to fit a new camera at a cost of £289. The phone has a cracked screen and I felt like they were hinting that this was in some way contributing to the camera fault, my phone has had a cracked screen for some time now, and on a recent holiday this was not a problem as the camera was working as it should. The phone has not been taken apart or tampered with in any way yet the camera is now not a genuine part, I am hoping one of two things happen soon, either Apple release an update for the software that seems to be responsible for this issue, or they realize it is a problem with their cameras and do a free replacement.

There is no update. I just dealt with it for an almost year and then upgraded. The issue was never fixed, and my understanding is that it was a hardware issue…. That came randomly when the phone was in otherwise perfect condition and had never been dropped in water or anything of the sort. Although it may have been a hardware issue, maybe triggered by the update or not, it seems like it was defective hardware.

Apples only solution is to send the phone in and be without it for weeks, or take it into a store, which is not feasible for people in rural areas like myself. Seems like defective hardware that may or may not have been triggered by the update. That’s the only possible cause for something that happened randomly to a phone that was in otherwise perfect condition and had never been dropped in water or anything prior to this happening.

My device's coverage has expired, and now, after restarting it today, I'm getting a message pop-up. This feels like a money grab—I'm expected to pay out of pocket for an issue that isn't my fault but rather due to a manufacturing defect on Apple's part! To add to that, I've never had it repaired before.

The response I got from an Apple Support Senior Advisor was as follows:

"As I said before, if you had AppleCare+, you would have had 30 days to extend it. If you only had a warranty, that wouldn't have covered this anyway. Apple doesn't care who caused it; if you don't have coverage, you have to pay."

Add me into this game as well. Right after the update upon restart it showed me that message as well. Just 2 days before the update and one week earlier I took photos with all lenses without issues.

How come a software declares a unit as defective and why is it happening after updating the device?

something is going with apple and the customer has to pay
