Iphone usb tether to car stereo unit

I just had a Sony XAV-AX6000 installed in my car. I'm trying to update the firmware but the Sony system can't read the download onn a USB drive. I've tried different sized USB drives and even reformatted the drive, but no luck. The other option to update the firmware is by USB tethering my iPhone to the unit. I can't figure out how to do that. Does anyone know?

iPhone 5s, iOS 11

I don’t think you can use your iPhone in the method you are wanting to update your radio firmware (the iPhone won’t function as an external hard drive in the way you’re wanting to the best of my knowledge). But you should be contacting Sony support about this and any other options you may have. Or checking Sony user forums.

That's a question you would have to put to Sony.

I'm guessing that the idea is to have the head unit download the update directly via your phone's cellular data connection.

If that's the case, you should, in theory, be able to plug the USB-lightning cable into the head unit and the phone and turn on your personal hotspot on the phone, assuming you have that feature provisioned on your cell service.

If you actually have an iPhone 5s, as your signature seems to indicate, I would absolutely NOT recommend trying this.
