AirPods Pro 2 and Charger Compatibilty

I've just bought the AirPods Pro 2 USB-C (A3048) and I suffer a "compatibility issue" with all my new generation chargers.

I have several fast-chargers with technology GaN and PD capabilites (see list below). All of them are ok with my iPhone 13 Pro and with my AirPods Pro 1st Gen, but not with my new AirPods Pro 2 USB-C.

When I connect it to my AirPods Pro 2, the AirPods Pro Case starts blinking as "charging error". Moreover, with open lid, the iPhone screen shows the case image with flash picture that is appearing and disappearing repeatdly. Furthermore, leaving the case connected, the charging percentage decrease (draining energy).

This issue is not appearing with my old generation Apple USB-A charger (and cable USB-A to USB-C).

So, thinking about defective chargers, I replaced them under warranty, but with new chargers the effect is still the same.

So I went to Genius Bar in Italy and they said the AirPods are ok and the issue is due to the charger fault, because with Apple single USB-C charger is working (that charger was not GaN technology).

I asked also the clerk, which are the charger specification, but he told me there are no specification.

The Apple website reported "Connect the case to a power outlet using a USB-C cable and a compatible power adapter".

So, what are the real specification?

I'm using:

  • UGREEN Nexode 45W GaN Charger with USB-C
  • SPIGEN ARCSTATION 27W USB C Charger

All of them states there is universal compatibilty with Apple AirPods Pro.

I thought to buy also Apple dual USB-C charger, but since I'm travelling a lot, this charger is too big and heavy.

Hoping in a reply from Apple headquarter.

Meantime I would like to ask the community, which brand and model of USB-C charger dual port are they using with AirPods Pro 2 USB-C headphone.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Riccardo

Hi, Ricky_2k. I’m using a UGREEN charger and their cable too. They work fine with my iPhone 15 pro, iPad Mini and iPad Air, and my iWatch. However I’m facing the same issue with AirPods Pro 2nd Gen(type c). I got my first pair of AirPods for thanksgiving 2023 and they charged fine till 1st week of December and the case won’t charge anymore. I thought the issue with was with my AirPods and got them replaced. I’m seeing the same issue with the new pair too. Upon testing with different chargers and cable’s that I have lying around, I can conclude that they don’t charge with the ugreen adapter anymore. Surprisingly Samsung’s adapter works too. The only change between thanksgiving and December 1st week(when they stopped charging) from what I remember is I updated all my devices to the newer version of OS. Seems like Apple firmware update(6B34) bricked it to not work with specific adapters going forward. Expect this to happen with other Apple products too soon. I reached out to Apple support and they suggested to use Apple branded adapter instead of other brands as they claim that it may not be compatible. When I asked them about why the same adapter and the cable work fine for my other Apple products, they don’t have an answer. They also claimed that no one else has reported this issue but I’m pretty sure it’s not isolated to one or two incidents. Eventually this issue will be picked up by more people. Unfortunately, there is no turning back from this. I’d recommend to buy a new adapter.

The only chargers that I have found work for mine is the Apple brand chargers. If I use any other brand it shows that it’s charging, but never actually gets any charge. Super frustrating because it used to work fine on all of my chargers between my home, my car, my job, and my travel chargers I keep in my bag. I think my time using Apple is coming to a close in the near future.

Same here with the UGreen 45w charger.. Im sure it worked fine and now its blinking in orange. I dont think this is legal (at least in EU), the charger meet the specifications so making it no-compatible via an update sounds quite ilegal against the customer rights…

Edit:using a magsafe or the apple watch magsafe cabe and Ugreen seems to work, its only when using cable…

Dear Ricky_2K,

I have the same experience.

My GAN technology charger is unable to charge my Airpod pro 2 (usb-c).

I unsuccessfully tried the following:

  • use my “normal” cable 100w Ugreen usb c to usb
  • unplug all other cables from the charger
  • use the usb c cable to usb c provided with the Ugreen charger (With no other cables plugged in)

the only thing that worked is when i plugged the usb c cable into the apple charging brick.

frustrating… I have enough cables on my desk to add an extra one…

hopefully there is a solution… also sustainability wise…

Hi ,Ricky_2k.

I recently upgraded to the AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C charging (model A3048) and have encountered the same frustrating charging compatibility issue that seems to defy the convenience promised by the switch to USB-C.

Previously, I used the first-generation AirPods Pro with a Lightning connector. I made the switch because I predominantly use USB-C to charge my devices. With my 65W GaN technology fast charger, which has worked seamlessly with my other devices, the AirPods Pro 2 case repeatedly blinks orange to signal a charging error. Despite the case being connected for charging, the battery percentage actually decreases instead of increasing. This issue is particularly vexing as you might leave the AirPods to charge, only to find them even more depleted later.

I am not sure whether this is a software or hardware issue, but it clearly contradicts the purpose of adopting a USB-C interface for user convenience in the first place.

From browsing the community, I've noticed you guys are encountering similar issues. However, responses and solutions seem scarce, with advice often pointing back to using Apple-branded chargers. I'm eager to hear if others have faced similar challenges and what solutions or workarounds might exist. Hopefully there are enough people shouting this problem out and grabs more attention from Apple so that they can take this seriously or even eventually have a solid solution for this annoying problem.

Thanks in advance,

Roger
