Wireless Apple Car Play in 2024 Hyundai Tucson Limited

Why can’t I connect to Apple Car Play wirelessly in my new Tucson. This is my first Hyundai and I am extremely disappointed I cannot connect CarPlay wirelessly. All other vehicles I have owned provided wireless play connect. This is so antiquated. Just because I have built in navigation should not prohibit the wireless connection. Please fix this with some type of IOS or Hyundai update. Please!

Thanks, I will look into the device you mentioned.

This is my first Hyundai. I have always driven cars with wireless Apple CarPlay. I do not like having to connect my iPhone to the car via a cable. This is annoying. Like my previous cars, I want to be able to simply get in my car, leave my iPhone in my purse and automatically have access to Apple CarPlay. I can listen to audiobooks, Pandora, my AppleMusic, send/retrieve What's App messages. I do not rely on Google Maps....I use the car navigation, but the hook up via a cable is a pure drag. Hyundai, please fix this. It's ridiculous!!!

Well, what Hyundai doesn't know about usability would fill volumes.

  • I hunted for and found the update page on Hyundai's website (https://update.hyundai.com/US/EN/updateNoticeView/GnwBK4):
  • I Installed the Navigation Updater app
  • In the Navigation Updater app, I identified my vehicle clicked the download button
  • After downloading the 50 GB of files, I copied them to the root of an exfat formatted USB key
  • I pluuged the key into my car and got this:

I agree. Archaic indeed. I was told an upgrade would be coming from Hyundai for my 2024 Limited to provide wireless Apple Carplay capability. After reading all the posts on this site, I decided to simply purchase the adapter, but I agree, Why should we have to purchase adapters if an upgrade was promised? Additionally, you received the upgrade, but it doesn't work. Not a happy camper either. This is absurd. If they can make it work on lower-trim Hyundais, just make it work on all Hyundais!

Similar issues with my 24 Kona EV.

I wish it would work fine with a USB cable. That option doesn't fix anything for me (just like another post mentioned), even if I set it up to not use wireless Apple CarPlay. So I'm not sure it has anything to do with the wireless side of things.

Siri listens/responds to herself, unsends messages, sends stuff I didn't say (but she did). Music continues to play in the background so that creates an added level of frustration. It will even unmute audio when I use Siri. They only way to keep music from playing is to drop the level to 0 before I activate Siri.

Continuing my tale of woe, in my efforts to install the update using the Hyundai Navigation Updater app: I have not succeeded in installing the update yet, but am posting this so others may avoid going down the same rabbit holes I have died in. What HASN’T worked so far:

  • copying the folder of downloaded files to the root of the USB key (instead of the individual files)
  • reformatting the USB key ExFat on a PC (rather than reformatting it ExFat on a mac)
  • selecting the USB key as the destination for the download, rather than the default “NaU” folder located in my downloads folder - now, this may have moved the needle a bit because when I did this, it said, approximately: “are you sure, this drive will be reformatted Exfat and all contents will be deleted”. That was promising, except:
    • My small startup drive had only 30 GB to spare and the app balked, saying it needs “74 GB” of hard disk space as temporary storage for the download before copying to the USB key. This dialog prompted me to find another location, which I tried to do but iy crashed when I tried this from the prompt;
    • If I started over and tried from “settings” to change the temp storage to an external hard drive, the app said it was going to reformat it, so no;
    • If, from settings, I tried an internal volume other than the startup, it said “Only a hard disk can be used as a storage location”. IT WAS a hard disk.
    • I deleted enough from my startup to free up 78 GB (note here that 78>74), the app balked again, saying it needs “74 GB” of hard disk space as temporary storage for the download before copying to the USB key.
    • How about 81 GB? No.
    • Deleted more and rebooted. 86 GB Enough? No. It needs “74 GB” of hard disk.

Major clown show.

So sorry the update did not work correctly. I've given up hoping Hyundai will deliver a wireless Apple Carplay software update for the 2024 Tucson Limited. I bought a wireless adapter for Apple Carplay on Amazon,Teeran wireless adapter. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BBG4QRPX?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

So far, pretty good. I can leave my phone in my purse and it connects with the adapter when I start the car. I have access to all the carplay features I wanted.

Not sure why you say your car will be processed as a lemon. Were there other problems?

UPDATE:

Exec summary: I have successfully updated the software on my Tucson PHEV but, despite the update page clearly stating "You can connect Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto wirelessly without a USB cable!" my car says no.

The procedure I followed to upgrade:

  • Download the Navigation Updater app from this page - https://update.hyundai.com/US/EN/updateNoticeView/GnwBK4
  • Launch Navigation Updater and, in the first screen select your vehicle
  • Plug a USB key (at least 64 GB) into your computer and select it in the next screen - this was the key change from my previous failed efforts which actually followed Hyundai's Instructions
  • You will be warned that the app will erase and format your USB key. Read carefully to ensure it's referring to the USB key you are using for this purpose and confirm
  • The app will simultaneously download the update files and copy them over to your USB key
  • When finished, eject the key, plug it into your car, turn the car on (accessories on is enough) and follow the prompts to update.

In my case, the download/copy took about 30 minutes (300 Mb service) and the install about an hour.

Unfortunately, although the update was 100% successful, my car still tells me this:

Now, I am in Canada, and it may be that despite the page I was directed to by Hyundai Canada promising wireless CarPlay, it may not yet be offered here. I would be interested to hear whether it fixes that deficiency in American models.

As for why the method detailed above worked to update the software, my guess is that a finder copy may have put additional files on the key that frighted and confused the Tucson's operating system, whereas a key that was formatted and populated by the Hyundai app did it just the way the car wanted it.

Thank you. I wouldn't say I like using a USB connection with Apple Car Play. My previous vehicles always connected wirelessly. This is so backward with Hyundai. I was told because I have a factory-installed navigation system and a 10.25-inch nav screen, I have to use USB to connect. Lower trims without navigation can connect wirelessly. Why? This makes no sense. It is a pure drag to connect my phone to a USB cable in the car. I want to leave my phone in my purse and enjoy Apple CarPlay. Bluetooth works wirelessly, of course, in the car; but not Apple CarPlay. Supposedly there is some dispute between Apple and Hyundai about who owns the navigation button in the vehicle????? Stupid....just fix it and make it work. This is so annoying!

Cicibear, The first part of what you were told is the equivalent of your ISP insisting that you power cycle your modem when your internet is down, although you have clearly stated that everyone you know in the neighbourhood is also down. Useless boilerplate from 1st level support who don't have a clue.

The second part is just plain false.

they probs need to reload the cars software. After 3 check engine issues and 6 months of going back and forth to the dealer, (2024 N line Tucson hybrid) they reinstalled the software and it seems to be better. They said if the check engine came back on,they would start a buyback. Not because of CarPlay but because of many other weird driving issues and check engine. The CarPlay issue though is super annoying.

It won’t work if you have a built in navigation system which the higher levels do. At least that is the conclusion I have come to. After hours/days trying my dealer said they would take care of it for me. Their tech worked on it for an hour and half and Hyundai said my car didn’t have WiFi so it would t work. That makes zero sense and is wrong. No one at Hyundai customer care seems to have a clue either. The whole thing is so stupid. I literally had tears in my eyes when they told me they couldn’t get it to work but I have also been back and forth all winter due to a check engine light coming on 3 times. At least I think they got that fix. Not what I wanted to deal with spending 40k on a new car.
