iTunes will not add an imported cd to my music

On my desktop PC, I have many CDs added to my library, one of them being Ride the Lightning. Here’s the weird thing, it shows up in my iTunes library, all 8 songs are visible and play fine ON THE PC, but no matter what I try to sync and add the album to my phone, it will not show up.

if it does add the album, it’s only tracks 2-6, tracks 1,2,7, and 8 won’t be on my phone. And nothing I’ve done works. I’ve tried deleting the album from my iTunes library and re-importing it and re-syncing. Nothing. I’ve tried manually adding each song to my synced iPhone, NOTHING. I’ve tried restarting my computer and re-signing in to both devices and re-syncing. NOTHING. WHAT THE **** IS GOING ON. I don’t understand why this isn’t working. I’ve spent a couple hours on this to no avail. Does anyone have a clue what the **** is going on here?

Two things to do:

  • one - check your iTunes Library to ensure that all the songs missing from your phone have a tick (checkmark) in the box to the left of the song title. In the Songs view, the layout looks like the one shown below:

  • or in the Artists view, where unticked (unchecked) songs will be greyed out, as shown below:

If they needed ticking, you will then need to Sync your phone with iTunes for the change to take effect.

  • two - if the songs were already ticked, check the track details for every track to ensure the following:
    • all songs have the same album artist information (note; this is the album artist tag, not the artist tag). If the tag has the text Various Artists, or greyed-out Mixed in it, overtype it with the name Metallica, which unless I'm very mistaken, is the band responsible for the Ride the Lightning album
    • none of the songs have the compilation flag on

Your album details, when selecting all the tracks on the album, should look similar to the one shown below:

Oh, one more thing; no need for the all caps or the asterisks. Thank you very much.

Although you have remedied the problem, it might pay to sort out the missing tick marks menu option that I mentioned so that you have an easier way to solve the current issue should it happen again. (If you follow the American practice, for tick boxes, read check boxes.)

In my previous post I included a screenshot of the context menu when right-clicking a song. If the tick selection/untick selection option is missing from that menu, the option has been turned off. It should be between the Rating and the Show Album in Library options:

You might find it useful to turn it on again. On iTunes' top bar menu, click on Edit/Preferences/General>Show: List view tickboxes and make sure the tick is on that box (tap in the box to turn it on):

Now when we look at the context menu for a song, we see an additional option on the menu:

You will also notice a column to the left of the song titles with ticks in it. That's the same as the right-click menu option. (It says untick selection now because the song is currently ticked.)

In case you're wondering, the tick/untick option can be very useful. Suppose you have music in your Library that you only want on your iPod at certain times of the year (Christmas for example). By unticking Christmas songs in the Library, when you play music in the library, the unticked songs will be skipped. Also, if the option to Sync only ticked songs and videos is left on, when songs are unticked they will be removed at the next Sync, but left in the Library. When you next want those songs back on a device, simply turn the tick back on and perform a Sync.

Sync only ticked songs and videos is found when the device is connected to iTunes. Look on Device/Settings/Summary>Sync only ticked songs and videos. (it may not be a selectable option if you use Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi.
