Why can’t I send myself an iMessage since iOS 16 (2022)?

I saw this posted, but no good answers. Until last year, I could always send myself iMessages on my iPhone, and they showed up as blue iMessages. I can also send iMessages from my iPad and MacBook.

Well ever since the iOS 16 update in 2022, my iPhone no longer sends blue iMessages to me, it only sends my self messages as text messages. Yet, my iPad still sends messages as iMessages. This is frustrating and interferes with me sending photos.

When I send a message to myself on my iPhone, it shows up as a green text, not an iMessage. Yet, if I reply from any of my other Apple devices, it goes through as a blue iMessage. But if I then reply for my iPhone, it again goes through as a green text again. I’m super frustrated, and I even went to the Apple Store Genius Bar and they couldn’t fix it and provided no solution.

Has anyone else had this and found a solution? Please help. I’ve stopped sending messages to myself out of frustration. It’s almost like my iPad is acting like my iPhone and my iPhone is acting like a random phone, not an Apple phone. Help me!

There might be a couple of things you can try to troubleshoot this problem:

  1. Ensure that iMessage is still activated on your iPhone. Sometimes updates can reset certain settings, so it's worth verifying that iMessage is turned on. Go to Settings > Messages and toggle the iMessage switch if it's turned off.
  2. Resetting network settings can sometimes help with communication issues. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Please note that this will reset your Wi-Fi passwords and any other network-related settings, so you might need to re-enter them.
  3. Try signing out of your Apple ID in the Messages settings and then signing back in. Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > Apple ID and tap on your ID. Choose "Sign Out" and then sign back in.
  4. This is a drastic step and should only be considered if nothing else works. A factory reset will erase all data from your iPhone, so make sure to back up your important information before attempting this. After the reset, set up your iPhone as a new device and see if the issue persists.

iMessage (Blue) -

  • iPhone to iPhone: requires internet (Either over WiFi or Cellular Service) as it is sent over internet protocol. Needs Activation on your device.
  • iPhone to Android: Not available

SMS/MMS (Green) -

  • iPhone to Android: does not require any internet it is sent over cellular voice protocol. Needs to be enabled by your Carrier for the SIM used by you.
  • iPhone to iPhone: When iMessage is not activated or the device is not connected to the internet either over cellular or WiFi
  • You need to have an SMS/MMS plan enabled by your carrier for the SIM/eSIM that you use on your device. Apple Inc does not provide SMS/MMS services.

It will turn from Blue to Green if you have enabled "Send as SMS" and whenever your iPhone is not connected to the internet it is sent as SMS (green) to all iPhone users.
