Are WD My Passport USB 3.0 drives compatible with MacBook Air M2?

I've been using a WD My Passport 4TB USB 3.0 external HDD (One of these) for a couple of years now, firstly as additional storage from my 2013 MacBook Pro and more recently my 2019 27" iMac with no problems at all (I even bought a second one to use exclusively for Time Machine).

I recently bought a MacBook Air M2 to replace the MBP and generally it's great - I also use a SanDisk 2GB SSB for shorter term storage and that works fine with all the above Macs. However, the WD My Passport does not appear at all on the MBA using the standard USB-A to USB-C adaptor that comes with it. The light on the HDD illuminates and I can hear and feel the disk spinning, but even after around 30 minutes of waiting, it doesn't appear on the desktop or in disk utility and it also doesn't register on the USB port in system report.

Is this type of drive just not compatible with MacBook Air M2? Does the MBA lack sufficient charge through the USB-C port to power the drive? If this is the case, that's no problem - does anyone know of a workaround using a hub that can power the drive or should I switch to a USB-C drive that will work across my devices? The WD My Passport still works just fine on my iMac, but it would be handy to be able to access its files from my MBA and also use my second external HDD for Time Machine.

Thanks in advance!
