WD My Passport does not connect to the Mac Book Air (it is meant to back up) or to my iMac--when connected to a USB port on the iMac, an amber light on the external drive blinks on and off every few seconds, but it does not show up as an external drive on Disk Utility--I have a second My Passport which has functioned properly on the iMac for years

A followup as promised: Western Digital support responded to my inquiry and after I answered their questions (no error messages, does not show up on Disk Utility) they concluded the drive was non-functional. And, offered me a replacement, despite the drive is definitely Out of Warranty! I'm impressed.

Open Activity Monitor in Utilities, View>All Processes, sort on Name, see if fsck is running, if so force quit it.
In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.
Run Disk First Aid on all items in the left panel, from top down.
Thank you, BDAqua. I followed your steps as best I could. Could not find "fsck" running. Disk utility shows internal SSD, which checked out fine, but no external drive shows up, so no First Aid possible. I have since reached out to Western Digital support for, perhaps, an explanation of the blinking amber light.
