I was wondering what a normal range for down stair walking speed might be. I also want to know if the watch is recording accurately when I take stairs two at a time going down.
It doesn’t appear that it measures two at a time stair descent.

The watch does not calculate descending stairs (going down flights) speed. The iPhone will calculate stair speed down and up.
The watch will only count the number of flights going up if they are taken at a normal speed and are more than 10 feet of rise.
The only way I know is that when I go down two steps at a time I’ve never met anyone who can keep up with me. So I know that it is very fast and I know that is much faster than the max of 2.5 ft./s which is what the watch reports. Somehow I don’t believe that the watch is recording my speed in these instances. And of course the watch can know the difference between one step and two steps, because the vertical distance between foot strikes is longer between 2 steps than one.
The Apple Watch measure speed and distance with an accelerometer. It knows that when I am dropping at a certain rate of acceleration and it knows the time between steps, then it should know that I’m going two steps at a time.
Think about it… how would the watch know you’re taking 2 stairs? Come on…🤪
I think you’re making a mountain out of a mole hill. A step is a step no matter how big it is or how small it is. You still burn the same energy.
Er no, nonsense. Taking big strides at the limit of what you’re capable of is a lot more demanding than small strides.
