Do u get money for recycling a Macbook Air that no longer turns on

I have a macbook air that I spilled a drink in so it no longer turns on. It is an early 2015 model. I put all the information to trade it in with apple and received an email with the shipping label. However, the email said I would not receive a trade in credit. I wasn’t expecting much but would this mean I will just be giving it away back to apple?
