Presets for 27" Mac Studio Display - 2nd Display for 2017 iMac

I have a 2017 iMac and am using the Studio Display as a second monitor. All has been great for a year or more.


I am suddenly having issues with my Apple Studio Display and its settings.


The Studio Display will drop in resolution and no longer act like a 5K display. Right now, the display is set to 3840 x 2160 (instead of its normal 5120 x 2880) and I seem to have no way to change the setting. The odd thing is the desktop pictures on the iMac and Studio Displays look the same. But when I drag an item from the iMac to the Desktop, it is obvious that the window gets larger to reflect the lower resolution.


I am not sure what to use for the Studio Display presets.


I am running Monterey.


In Displays, when I hold down the Alt key and select 'Detect Displays', nothing happens.


Suggestions?

Try clicking Scaled and see if you can select 5120 x 2880



If that doesn't help,

1) try moving the Thunderbolt cable to the iMac's other Thunderbolt port.

2) try replacing or upgrading to a Thunderbolt 4 Pro cable.

3) contact Apple Support for assistance.


Have you recently added another high band width device to the iMac 's other Thunderbolt port...?

If so, the iMac may not have the ump to support both devices and provide the higher resolution.

Thanks to all.


Solved: The Thunderbolt cable that came with the Studio Display became defective. I switched in another one I had (thankfully) and was able to connect.


This was a simple connection from the iMac Thunderbolt connection straight to the one Thunderbolt connection on the display. Changing Scaling did not help (obviously) but I appreciate the suggestions.
