AirPods in a new case not working

So I recently lost my AirPod case for my new AirPods, so I put the AirPods in a old case I had laying around, the case is gen 1 and the AirPods are gen 2 but from the research I’ve done they should work, I’ve had the AirPods charging in the case for about a day now and I can’t tell if they’ve charged because there is no response when I take them out the case and put them in my ears. I’ve tried paring them to a device while in the case but holding down the button doesn’t cause the light in the case to flash white I’m actually not seeing any response from the light and it even turns off from being idle. What should I do?
