Using QuickTime player to record video

I need to copy a video from my desktop using QuickTime player but when I open QuickTime to start a screen recording I cannot start the video I want to record. If I start the playback of the video and then open screen record I will loose the beginning of the video. So how can I copy the whole thing ?

Please tell us more, because screen recording a different movie just for copying seems unnecessarily complicated.

For format shifting, it is advised to use conversion applications instead. E.g. HandBrake.

What is off about the source media file that you need to create a QuickTime copy?

What does Invisor Lite report about the media file?
