How to open .PKPASS files on my iPhone?

I've been sent a PKPASS file, representing a cinema ticket. It arrived as an attachment to an email. I tried to open it on my iPhone 13 Pro running iOS 17.1.2. Nothing happened. An internet search suggests that these files are associated with the Apple Wallet, which should therefore be able to open them. This just doesn't work for me. Have Apple changed something in iOS? Some sites reference Apple Passbook, but this doesn't seem to exist as an app.

Can anyone explain?

I have a similar problem with tickets sent to me in messenger. However it works fine for the same tickets sent by the same person or organization on my wife iPhone 13 running 17.4.1 which is identical to mine. When she receives a ticket via messenger it shows the actual ticket in messenger and functions as expected. When i get the very same ticket from the same sender on the same network it simply shows a .pkpass attachment with a question mark(?). If i copy the attached file and paste it into an email and email it to myself it comes back to me with an attachment showing a wallet icon. I click on it and it functions as expected and put it in my wallet. This work around is fine but it would be nice if the .pkpass file was recognized by messenger. I looked for ways to enable or disable certain file types in messenger but can’t find the option. I don’t understand why my wife's phone works perfectly.
