MacBook Pro stuck on apple logo - no progress bar

Tried to switch to a guest account. Would not accept password. Click restart and change password. Now stuck on apple logo - no progress bar. Turned it off twice and restarted. Same thing. Nothing attached to the MacBook.

Any suggestions?

MacBook Air black screen When I turn on my MacBook Air the Apple logo appears for a few seconds then disappears. After several tries the screen appears with the prompt to enter my password, I enter it and the screen goes black. [Re-Titled by Moderator]
