My Apple Mail is saying, "saving 330 or 477 drafts." There are four messages in my draft mailbox. What does this mean?

My 2009 iMac has been having Apple Mail problems for some while.

Apple no longer provides help for this.

Nor does it sell a large-screen iMac with Apple chips.

I need a large screen so that I can increase the type's point size and thus see it well.

iMac 27″, macOS 10.13

You can always get a MacMini or Mac Studio & a monitor size of your choosing, but...

Start with this if IntelMac...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Your Account>Mailbox Behaviors, what path is Drafts Mailbox set to?

Setting it to an On My Mac Drafts box generally cures it if you don't need Drafts sent to other devices.

Try setting to an On My Mac Box.

Are you using any Mail Rules?

Yet again, thanks for your kind help.

I set the Mail Preferences to "On My Mac," but when I close out of Preferences, the setting vanishes.

Am I doing something wrong?

I would get a Studio Monitor in a heartbeat, if Apple didn't charge $5,000. Buying another computer – and a keyboard – starts to add up to "real money," as Illinois Sen. Everett Dirkson used to say. . . .

Many thanks for Drive DX and SMART Utility.

Both found no problems at all.

I'm beginning to think that this problem may be too obscure to find/solve, absent the resources of the Apple CEO.

I try to take good care of my tools and equipment.

But waiting for a large-screen iMac with Apple chips. . . maybe is simply no longer viable.

The spinning beach ball makes me uneasy.

Your kind help is much appreciated.

"Inability to upgrade after purchase.

Inability to boot from external drives if internal SSD fails.

Wifi problems on MacMinis.

$800 screen problems on newer iMacs, can't remember if it's just M1s, or M2s & M3s also.

MacOS headed in directions I don't need or want.

Cost of purchasing all new SW for Apple silicon."

To which I replied, "So what would you recommend?"
