Editing live session in Logic pro

Hello everyone,

I have a specific question and need some advice.

My band records every rehearsal in Logic pro. Drum set, bass, Rhodes piano and several different synthesizers. We record a whole set where each instrument is recorded in its own channel + a whole set of microphones for drums. The set can last up to one hour where we improvise and look for interesting musical moments. Recording is without defined BPM.

My desire is to single out the most interesting segments of playing during the session and create some kind of basis for creating a future composition in the simplest way. I would single out interesting parts of the playing and put them together as a guide for developing a future composition.

The problem is that when I open the recorded Logic file, it is very difficult for me to connect interesting parts because of the free form of playing.

I know it's not a simple question, I see the answer as some kind of advice.

What would be some basic steps to get to what I want?

Thanks for the answers

  1. Create and rename a copy of the project with "Save As" and place the version into the same folder level as the existing project, otherwise Logic would copy all files too - regardless of the selected Asset options in the Project Settings.
  2. Go to Main Menu > File > Project Settings > General > Project Type > uncheck Use musical grid
  3. You may or may not change the "Snap" at the top of the main window. It might be could uncheck "Snap to grid" or set to "Samples" and "snap regions to absolute values"
  4. It's helpful to get used to the cutting commands at Main Menu > Edit > Cut/Insert Time ...
